The Galen Center is a state-of-the-art athletic facility for USC’s basketball and volleyball teams. The venue hosts 10,258 seats; an 89,000-square-foot athletic pavilion with office spaces and four, full-size practice courts for sports training and intramural sports.
The project features 22 private suites, locker rooms, a state-of-the-art weight room, medical training space, concession stands, support spaces, a multipurpose room with full kitchen, a merchandise store, and offices. Attached is a 45,000-square-foot pavilion with additional practice room including enough space for 4 full basketball courts or 9 volleyball courts and seating for 1,000. Galen’s design boasts 99-foot-high structural concrete perimeter walls featuring brick and architecturally colored concrete. Four corner turrets anchor the center and showcase hand-sculpted brick inlays depicting athletes.
Morley Construction Company provided concrete subcontracting services for the project, placing 25,779 cubic yards of Type I, cast-in-place concrete for the center’s foundations, columns, concourse decks, and raker beams. Over 170,000 square feet of architectural walls feature colored, sandblasted concrete with tie-holes, reveals, and embeds.
